ABOUT THE MALA NECKLACE PROJECT
ABOUT MALAS The word “Mala” means necklace. A Mala Necklace is an incredibly personal piece of jewelry. Every Mala is unique and personally designed. Whether creating and wearing a Mala Necklace is for spiritual reasons, or simply for adornment, the choices of beads, colors, and design reflects your sense of self and your sense of style. Mala Necklaces are widely used in Yoga and Meditation settings. When constructing a Mala necklace, it is important to be mindful of the intentions you want to bring into your life and focus. The Mala is used to help keep an accurate count of mantras during medication. The Mala was first used in the 8th c. BC in India.

A Mala can be made up of any factors of 108, such as 18, 27, 36 or 54. “9” is a very spiritual number in Buddhism, and many design choices involve multiples of 9. The number 12 is also an important number in Buddhism. 9 x 12 = 108.
Mala Beads Mala beads represent spiritual identity and connection to the universe. Malas are made up of beads which serve different functions.
We only count the prayer beads, not the marker, Guru or any additional decorative beads.
Usually the prayer beads are made from gemstones. They often are made with wood beads, as well. Each specific material (as well as the color of the material) will be associated with its own unique spiritual, healing, energy properties and personal significance. It is assumed that these properties of the materials are infused into the wearer by touching the skin.
Typically we put knots between prayer beads to protect them and make the Mala stronger.

These choices include things about technique, color and materials, and about form, structure and function. About Warren Feld 
"Jewelry Design Is A Life Lived With Wearable Art" -- Warren Feld
For Warren Feld, Jewelry Designer, beading and jewelry making endeavors have been wonderful adventures. These adventures, over the past 31 years, have taken Warren from the basics of bead stringing and bead weaving, to wire working and silver smithing, and onward to more complex jewelry designs which build on the strengths of a full range of technical skills and experiences.
He, along with his partner Jayden Alfre Jones, opened a small bead shop in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, about 30 years ago, and called it Land of Odds. Over time, Land of Odds evolved from a bricks and mortar store into a successful internet business – www.landofodds.com . In the late 1990s, Jayden and Warren opened up another bricks and mortar bead store – Be Dazzled Beads – in a trendy neighborhood of Nashville called Berry Hill. Together both businesses supply beaders and jewelry artists with all the supplies and parts they need to make beautiful pieces of wearable art.
Warren leads a group of instructors at Be Dazzled Beads. He teaches many of the bead-stringing, jewelry design as well as business-oriented courses in the curriculum. He works with people just getting started with beading and jewelry making, as well as with the program’s advanced bead study groups.
His pieces have appeared in beading and jewelry magazines and books. One of his pieces is in the Swarovski museum in Innsbruck, Austria.
