2. Wire Weaving with 2+ Base Wires

(beginner level)

You will be amazed how easy and quick it is to weave with wire and create a bangle bracelet!

Wire weaving is a set of techniques, similar to basket weaving, where you wrap thin weave wires around thicker base wires to create patterns and textures.  

You can then use these wire-woven strips to make all kinds of things, such as the framework to turn a cabochon or bead into a pendant, earring dangles, bracelets, bails, and the like.

- materials needed
- preparing the wire before weaving
- 3 different weaving patterns with some variation
- finishing off our wire-woven strip
- making a bangle bracelet using our wire weaving patterns

3. Jewelry Clinic: Crimping Like The Pros

Crimp like the pros! – Learn those 4 easy steps to crimping and make a simple bracelet.

Learn the basic steps of stringing beads on cable wire, and attaching a clasp by crimping, with crimp bead, crimp cover, horseshoe wire protector and crimping pliers

1. Aztec Styled Wrap Bracelet

(beginner/advanced beginner)

Capture the colors, patterns and textures of the Aztecs within two lengths of leather in this Wrap Bracelet!

Wrap Bracelets are constructed using a technique strongly related to loom weaving, with influence from basket weaving.     The technique used to weave Wrap Bracelets is typically referred to as “laddering”.

Here, you set up two warp cords (the leather) and weave, using either a Soumak or a Basket Weave Figure 8 pattern, with 2 needles, to create a composition between the two warp cords.

Create this Mayan inspired decorative wire weave and pendant bail around an elongated gemstone teardrop bead

- creating a 2-base wire soumak weave called Dressed or Nude

- shaping our wire weave to fit it around an elongated bead

- using the wire weave to create a bail and turning the bead into a pendant

3. Jewelry Clinic: Making a Stretchy Bracelet The Right Way

Stretchy bracelets are all the rage – learn how the best designers make them!

Stretchy bracelets are fun and easy to make, but first you must learn how to choose an elastic string, prepare the string before stringing, and finish off your piece.

- What steps you need to take to minimize memory loss, prevent breaking, and reduce the chance the two connected ends will come undone.

Why do so many people draw inspirations and connectedness from traditional styles of jewelry, and how literal should the designer be when contemporizing them?

What does it mean to "contemporize" traditional jewelry?

What makes the "traditional" stand apart from the "contemporary"?

Does the jewelry artist do something different when making a piece that would clearly be seen as contemporary, and not traditional?

 - identify differences between traditional and contemporary jewelry

- discuss different understandings of contemporizing traditional jewelry

- discuss ways to approach developing contemporized versions of traditional jewelry

2. Discussion seminar:   Threading the Business Needle

Jewelry Designers wear two hats – Artist and Business Person. Learn things they do to thread the business needle, and be smart about it!

For people who sell their jewelry, their art is both a business as well as a source of creativity and self-expression. 

How does someone get started selling their pieces?

What business fundamentals need to be brought to the fore?

How does the creative person develop and maintain a passion for business?

What similar traits do successful jewelry business share? How do you protect your intellectual property?
