DESCRIPTION:
Why do some pieces of jewelry draw your attention, and others do not? This course will help you answer this question by understanding how the composition of a piece of jewelry affects our appreciation for it. Ten design principles of composition are discussed. This is an intermediate level class.
Learn to strategically apply jewelry design principles of composition when making necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

PREREQUISITES:
ORIENTATION TO BEADS AND JEWELRY FINDINGS
(All students are required to begin our curriculum with this ORIENTATION CLASS. The Orientation Class is offered once a month.)
BEAD WEAVING BASICS (or equivalent)
BASICS OF BEAD STRINGING AND ATTACHING CLASPS (or equivalent)
INTRODUCTION TO BEADS AND COLOR
Some experience making necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Prefer student to have taken about 5 beginning level classes, or have equivalent experience.
GOALS:
To begin, in a structured way, to answer the question why some pieces of jewelry draw your attention, and others do not.
To explain an underlying grammar of jewelry design, by discussing how to apply ten major principles of composition to the jewelry design process.
PROJECT/TASKS:
Ten major principles of jewelry design composition will be discussed. Illustrative examples of each principle will be presented.
Students will be challenged to develop some jewelry designs in accordance with each principle.
SKILLS LEARNED:
Students will learn to apply ten jewelry design principles of composition:
1. Rhythm
2. Pointers
3. Planar Relationships
4. Interest
5. Statistical Distribution
6. Balance
7. Dimensionality
8. Temporal Extension
9. Physical Extension/Finishing
10. Parsimony
Students will begin to learn how to alter design goals by changing any one or more design principle(s).
SUPPLIES REQUIRED:
No additional supplies are required.
Students will need to bring the following:
Notepad and pen
